Nintendo DS -> Help! My DS is bricked!
Last modified on Mon, 4th Sep 2006 at 21:29 BST by zippletSo, you've bricked your shiny nintendo DS? Or it doesn't work and you suspect it's bricked? If either:
- the power light comes on but the screens do not light up
- the screens light up solid black or solid white
- an image of a brick wall is displayed on one of the screens
- a "hentai slideshow" is displayed (yes I'm being serious)
How did my nintendo DS get bricked?
You executed a bad piece of software on your nintendo DS which corrupted the firmware or replaced the firmware with a bad piece of program code. Be aware that there are some "trojans" floating around which will brick your nintendo DS if you execute them. Some antivirus packages detect them when you download them, take this as an example of one which is detected by Trend Micro's antivirus package. You must not rely on your antivirus package to detect these however - since they are not targetted at PCs your antivirus package does not need to detect them, and most probably will not.So, how do I fix my DS?
Depends on if you had flashme firmware or vanilla firmware. If you were sensible and installed flashme before messing around with homebrew code you'll have an easy time.Recovery using flashme firmware recovery
Piece of cake.- Flash a copy of flashme onto your GBA flash cartridge without a menu or other type of shell/loader.
- Pop that cartridge into your DS. Remove any DS card if present.
- Hold down START+SELECT+A+B and power on your DS. Keep holding down those keys until you see flashme boot.
- Follow the instructions on the screen to reinstall flashme.
Recovery WITHOUT flashme firmware recovery
You're in for a tough one. Maybe you will consider using flashme if you manage to repair your DS. Currently the only way involves soldering some wires to the circuit board inside the DS, connecting these to the parallel port on your PC and running a program on your PC that reflashes the firmware chip while the DS is not powered.Darkfader has provided a program and instructions to do this, but it is only for the advanced user. If you have never soldered before, I suggest you stay away and ask someone else to do it, or buy a new DS (and be more careful next time).
Download ppflash.zip and follow the instructions inside. Good luck.
